a young padawan lined his small but amassing collection of pez dispensers along the wainscoting top rail. Unsecured by restraining devices, the colorful moulded candy holders would often fall to random evil forces, with enough power to send them tumbling over into a unstoppable chain reaction - the deadly domino effect. Determined to save the defenceless group from certain chipping if not - the unthinkable worse, we raced against time to find a solution and save the collection from an uncertain future...
There are 115, he tells me. Originally we planned to use an Ikea billy cd shelf but instead opted for the Bestå (60x30x64) 3-shelf unit. We bought some extra shelving which we used to build two additional levels of step like platforms for each shelf. At the DIY I bought iron on edging (to tidy up the sawn extra shelving), white clamp strips and double sided foam tape... Cut the extra shelving to slide snuggily onto the existing shelf and attached a clamp-strip using the double sided tape. Left 7 cm open on each side so dispensers could be easily added or removed. Slid in the pez and mounted - it still needs a bottom strip and I think we may tweek the height of the platforms or add an underlying grip rack to attach hooks/holders onto for other relevant pezzy things (like the sweets) but all in all pretty happy with the outcome.
This post was featured on July 10, 2013 at IKEA hackers - thanks Jules!
Instead of grouping them he decided to mix n match - we did place the taller ones in the back and favourites in the front. Where else would Thor be caught between Little Miss Sunshine and Melman the Giraffe?
Not sure what the clampy thing is technically called - here's a close up - it cost 99 ct for a meter, we halved them for each shelf.
